Supramolecular assemblies of polyrotaxane type : Synthesis and applications for future。
Supramolecular chemistry is at the origin of the smart supramolecular system syntheses. Supramolecular assemblies of polyrotaxane type could be symbolized as a pearl necklace. The pearls are cyclic molecules which could move along the polymer chain blocked at each ends by large groups avoiding “pearl” dethreading. This type of structure is recognized as confering a dynamer character with unexpected properties. The understanding of the pseudo-polyrotaxanes properties has led to optimize a new synthetic pathway with a high 95% yield, higher than yields ever reported in the literature giving hardly more than 20%. This result opens more economical uses of these new assemblies for applications with adaptative mechanical properties; several examples of new applications will be discussed: for instance new water soluble polyrotaxanes have been synthetized. Polyrotaxane synthesis based on conductive polymer has been developed by a collaboration with the Iasi group in Roumania. In another example, the discovery of the outstanding mechanical properties of slidding gels of polyrotaxanes has made possible patent filing with the Japanese society Menicon about a new polyrotaxane synthesis.
